I will probably never forget the day that we went to Target (we are there almost daily it seems) to pick up a few things that we needed and were looking in the toy section for my daughter, who had a few dollars to spend. As we walked up and down the aisles, we came across the row with the Disney plush toys. She looked and almost immediately saw a large stuffed Jake that she just had to have. I questioned it, not only because I had never seen her watch the show or talk about Jake before but also as I do most requests for stuffed toys, because they quickly fall out of favor and she is always wanting a new one.

I told her it wasn't on sale and I didn't realize she was a fan, so I said that we had to wait to get it. That way, she could think about it and make sure that was how she wanted to spend her money. I explained, that if it went on sale and she still wanted it, then maybe we could come back and get it. She immediately started to melt down. I don't think that I had ever seen her throw a fit quite like this. So, I calmly (as best I could stay calm), picked her up and carried her out of the store, leaving behind the cart of items that I had come to pick up. I don't know that anyone I know was there as I walked out carrying my very upset and loud daughter, as I was not about to make eye contact with anyone.

We talked about it later and she understood that was not the way to act and that sometimes, we have to wait and get things right away when we think that we want them. I explained again that I had never seen her even watch the show or talk about Jake. She told me that they watched it at daycare and she was a fan. So, as things have a way of working out, we set up Jake to record and she now watches it regularly. We did eventually, a few months later, buy that large stuffed Jake, when he was on sale...but only after we reviewed the experience of the first time she asked for Jake and what was wrong with her approach. She regularly watches his show with him and frequently he is the stuffed toy of choice at bedtime. So, in the end, it worked out that she has stuck with him and not lost interest.

She also is a fan of Sofia the First and anxiously awaits the release of each new episode, so when I learned that Disney Junior Live! Pirate & Princess Adventure was coming to Youngstown, I knew that she would be very excited to go and see two of her favorite Disney Junior characters live.

Disney's Phineas and Ferb: The Best LIVE Show Ever! - Discount Code and Giveaway!

I'm not sure when we started watching Phineas and Ferb, but I do know that it is one of the kids' favorite series.

Last year, the birthday theme for my son's birthday was Phineas and Ferb. We were evidently early on the trend, because the themed paper good products were not available (from the supplier) until September. We managed to get them through eBay. I made the cake and must say, I think it turned out pretty cool!

Disney World Vacation - suggestions?

We are in the process of trying to plan a trip to Disney World for the family. My husband and I have both been as children, but this will be our first trip as a family. The kids are excited, but I think that we are probably more excited right now.

There are so many options in planning a trip to Disney World, that it starts to feel overwhelming. We are currently trying to figure out where to stay and whether the dining plan will be a good value for us.

Since this is the first trip for the family to Disney World, we think that we would like to stay at a Disney Resort location. We have narrowed in on a Moderate Resort and are considering Coronado Springs Resort. That being said, we have some points, not enough for the whole stay, but could potentially have some free nights at the Hilton by Downtown Disney. Normally, I would say that I wouldn't consider the Hilton, but it is on Disney property, includes transportation to the park and they do offer the Extra Magic Hours Benefit. Thing is that the rates for the room at Coronado are cheaper, plus if we start to bundle it, I think that there could be better value. It appears that both locations have a fee for wi-fi - not that I expect to be on it a lot, but still, something to consider. I know that the Hilton has a per day parking fee (we likely are driving), but can't seem to find that information for the Coronado Springs Resort.

Have you stayed at either of these resorts? What is your preference/feedback on the resorts? Have you stayed at another Moderate Resort at Disney World? What did you think? What do you see as pros/cons of staying at a Disney Resort location over another local Hotel Resort?

Next area of consideration is food. Of course, if we go with the Hilton, the dining package is not an option, but if we stay at Coronado Springs (or another Disney Resort), should we get the dining plan? I have read mixed assessments of the value of the package, what are your thoughts? Do you go with the 2 quick service/2 snack option or with the 1 table service/1 quick service/1 snack option? As I browsed menus on-line for many of the Disney Table Service locations in the parks, it seemed that we could likely spend a little less by being selective in our dining, but having the meal plan allows us to not worry as much about the where. That is part of what I liked about our Honeymoon - we went to an all inclusive, so we knew up front what most of our costs would be. I feel that the dining plan is similar.

Have you used the dining plan? Do you feel there was a value? How old were yhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifour kids? If you got the dining plan, did you still find yourself spending out of pocket on food?

What about Character dining/experiences? I feel like we likely would do a Disney Princess dining and maybe another more gender neutral one. I have also heard that the Star Wars Jedi Training Academy is something we will want to do for our son.

The Key to the Kingdom

I have always enjoyed Disney. I have always enjoyed reading (at least I don't recall a time when I didn't like to read). So, when I was given the opportunity to read and review the new book by Jeff Dixon, The Key to the Kingdom, I was intrigued.

The book is essentially a mystery. The main character, Grayson Hawkes meets with a friend late one evening and he shares some information about the history of Walt Disney and Walt Disney World and gives him a gift and his first clue. The story follows Hawk through Walt Disney World as he tries to understand what his friend told him before disappearing and works his way through a series of clues looking for the answer.

I expected there to be some double meaning in the title of the book, as Hawk also does happen to be the pastor at the Celebration Community Church. There are some mentions of discussion of religion and some portions of the story take place within the church, but it certainly is not a focus of the story as I thought it might be. I am okay with that, just surprised.

The book is told through the use of a narrator, who has insight on the thoughts and actions of Hawk, with dialogue driving much of the story. The book jumps right in and starts the story. There is only minimal character development in the book, but it feels okay. The story focuses more on the progression of the solving of the clues, providing some character detail in the process. The pace of the story is quick and is broken down into many short chapters (which for my just one more chapter approach to reading at bedtime, makes it a lot easier to talk myself into one more chapter). The style of the writing is very different from other books that I have been reading lately, it seemed less "deep", probably becuase of the minimal character development and the short chapters breaking it up. Still, with the pace of the book, it works.

As I read (and having read the disclaimer at the start of the book), I found myself wondering how much is real and how much is fiction, in terms of the history, the trivia and the locations within the park. Based on some information on the book's website, there is at least a portion that is real. Reading the book certainly has me looking forward to my trip to Disney, I want to look for some of the sites that are referenced and see for myself what references are real.

Disney On Ice - Toy Story 3

So, this weekend (right before I managed to succumb to a stomach bug) the family headed to Cleveland to enjoy Disney On Ice - Toy Story 3. As has been my experience with Disney on Ice productions, the show was great. The kids were thoroughly engrossed in the show. Ever the critic, my son was quick to point out songs that were from Toy Story 2 and scenes from Toy Story. But, that aside, he still enjoyed the show. My daughter liked it but felt that there needed to be more Buzz Lightyear in the show - he wasn't in every scene if you can beleive it.

The show opened with a welcome by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck.

I'm always amazed by the talent of the skaters performing the show. I spent half the time trying to figure out if Ham was one skater or two. Seeing Slinky Dog and Bullet on ice was impressive - you know that there likely was two skaters in those costumes, making it all hte more impressive how choreographed and in sync their moves were.

There were so many fun parts, I'm not sure which one was my favortie.

I enjoyed the scene with the green army figures. For their initial entrance - one guy even "parachuted" in, which was pretty cool. To add to the effect, the screen on the backdrop showed the shadows of other army guys parachuting in. It was also neat to watch them march in formation around the ice (sometimes when I skate, I feel a little like I'm marching, but they did it with a lot more grace and form).

The flashback to Toy Story to the Pizza Planet and the "spaceship" that Buzz climbed into was fun. All of the martians and "The Claw" were even part of the scene. I didn't notice at first, but all of the martian skaters came out on their knees!

Another part that we really enjoyed was when Ken modeled all of his clothes for Barbie. The kids were pretty impressed that he would grab an outfit and come skating out in a matter of moments in the new outfit.


Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are being released today as Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. Each combo pack includes a coupon good for one admission (up to $8.50) to Toy Story 3 when it comes out this summer.

Disney On Ice Let's Celebrate!

Disney on Ice Let's Celebrate is a party on ice with all of your favorite Disney friends as they celebrate all of your favorite holidays. It is described as a magical medley of holidays, celebrations and festivals from around the globe, including a winter wonderland, a Halloween haunt, a Royal ball and more.

Last night, the family headed to Cleveland to watch the Disney On Ice Let's Celebrate Show. The show was very good, and very current, even the characters from Princess and the Frog was part of the show. The opening of the show gradually brought out many of the familiar Disney characters - from Mickey Mouse to the Mad Hatter and, of course, the Princesses. My daughter was totally in awe of the Princesses. As each Princess came out, she wanted to know who it was and where was Cinderella.

The first half of the show included an Un-Birthday Party, a Halloween Haunt, a Royal Ball and more. The Halloween Haunt was an interesting way to include a number of your favorite villains - including Cruella De Vil, Ursula, and the Evil Queen from Snow White, amongst others. The Royal Ball featured the Princesses and their Princes, dancing to their theme song as they tried to help Minnie answer the question how will I know if I have met my Prince.


The second half of the show seemed to be much shorter than the first half and many of the celebrations didn't include many of the Disney Characters - which made those feel a little like filler to make the show longer. It did introduce some new favorites that had not been part of the first half - Lilo and Stitch, Woody, Buzz and other toys from Toy Story. I think the cutest one to see on ice was Hamm from Toy Story. I couldn't imagine being the skater in that costume in a crouched position for that long though.

Both my son and daughter enjoyed the show. When asked, my son told me first that the part of the show where the brooms came alive was his favorite and then, that seeing the skating was his favorite. My daughter told me that seeing Alice from Alice in Wonderland was her favorite (I would have guessed princesses, but you know she's 3). My daughter asked if we could go again on the ride home. Seeing the skaters spinning, jumping and lifting was great. It makes me look forward to the Winter Olympics. We went ice skating with the kids a few weeks ago for the first time and this was the first ice skating performance the kids had seen. I think it will be fun to watch some of the skating with them during the Olympics, now that they are more familiar.

Disney On Ice Let's Celebrate

Disney on Ice Let's Celebrate is a party on ice with all of your favorite Disney friends as they celebrate all of your favorite holidays. It is described as a magical medley of holidays, celebrations and festivals from around the globe, including a winter wonderland, a Halloween haunt, a Royal ball and more.

I am so excited to take my kids to see this show. The only Disney show that we have seen live is The Imagination Movers and they loved that show. It was a wonderful show by the way - my daughter is still talking about it two months later. Both of my kids have been fans of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for years and of course, my daughter is a huge fan of the Disney Princesses. It will be great to see their reaction to all those Disney characters performing.
