December 1st: A little early in the season for my liking but here in NEO, it is a blustery and snowy day. The kids are glad to be home on their first official snow day of the school year. It means a day filled with cuddling up to read and to watch movies and television. This means that everyone will grab for their favorite blanket as they look to stay cozy while the snow blows around outside.

Blankets have always been a big deal for us. I think it started when I was a kid. I had that special afghan that Grandma made me and I remember using it in the family room as we hung out watching tv, curling up under it while I read and sleeping tucked in beneath it at night. When I got my first apartment, having a cozy bed with fluffy and cozy blankets was a must. It was part of my vision for my new place. When we became homeowners and went on vacation, a blanket was the souvenier of choice on more than a couple of trips. Last year, I had the opportunity to learn to make a chunky knit blanket and then came home and helped my daughter make another one for herself.

Blankets are a great add for themed gifts too. A popcorn bucket, some candy and a pack of popcorn, a couple of DVDs, a cozy blanket and socks for watching movies is one example of a basket that I have put together for friends. One year, I did a Christmas themed basket for friends that just bought a new house. I filled it with a Christmas print blanket, a new home ornament, some candy canes and hot chocolate and two mugs. Another theme where a blanket is a great addition is a Picnic theme basket. Of course, here we need to do an indoor picnic at the holidays. Start with a blanket, include a bottle of wine, a couple of glasses, a corkscrew and some crackers and a charcuterie board.

My daughter was quick to adopt this blanket when it arrived right before Thanksgiving. She describes it as big, cozy and warm. It is the perfect size for using on a bed or covering up while watching your favorite show or reading your favorite book. When I asked what she liked best, the two different sides with different textures to keep you warm. She often debates which side should be on the inside - my answer, whichever one feels best to you.

This blanket is warm, with a cozy texture and available in multiple sizes, making it a perfect gift option for those that long to be cozy. It makes a great housewarming basket gift or a straight up gift to someone that loves blankets like we do.

At my house, we have been anxiously awaiting the release of Minions. So much so, that we already have the movie time scheduled on our calendar. One in a Minion

This year for Valentine's day, we decided to go a different route and not just buy cards at the store for my daughter's class. I also wanted to avoid giving candy - I don't remember passing out or receiving candy as part of Valentine's Day card exchanges when I was a kid, but now it seems that everyone attaches some type of candy or lollipop to their cards. Now that my kids aren't in preschool, we no longer get to make things for class parties, so making a treat sounded like a fun way to go.

I have some seen some really cute ideas around and decided it would be fun to make something. We decided on making an edible treat and attaching a card to the baggie...so, I guess I didn't totally get away from sweets, but at least I went cookie instead of candy. What did we make, you ask...as if the title of this post didn't give it away...Minions!..and we attached a card that said "You're one in a Minion. Happy Valentine's Day"

This is not an original idea, you can see my inspiration here. I did go a cheaper route though and used a tub of frosting and used frosting colors to make the blue and the black frosting that I needed and used a decorating tip on a zipper baggie to decorate the cookies, rather than buying the more expensive pre-colored cake/cookie frosting. It worked well for me. I was able to find the candy eyes at Target in their baking aisle.

I started by giving all of them overalls. Then we did the glasses, smile and hair...placing one or two eyes on each as we went. For the glasses, I pretty much drew a straight line across and then either put one or two dots on it so that when the eye was placed, it would give a black rim under it.

We did our best to make several different looking Minions. Some had hair, others did not...we even varied up the hairstyle.

We used the snack size zipper bags for holding the cookies and used the Avery business card stock for printing the cards - they were the perfect size.

Entertainment Book - a giveaway

I like to save money, it is no secret. One tool that I have used to help me save money for several years (over 20 years to be sure!) has been the Entertainment Book. I first learned about the book when I was a kid. My parents had the book and I can remember using the coupons. It was when I went off to college and started dating that I became a first-time owner of my own Entertainment Book.

It may seem odd that a college student would own an Entertainment Book, but I got a book with my boyfriend because of all the fine dining offers. The offers in the front of the book, were BOGO offers at local fine dining locations. It allowed us to be 'fancy' in dating while still on a college budget. It was also a benefit for us when we would order pizza or go to the movie.

When I moved to Pittsburgh after college, I got an Entertainment Book for a different reason - to help me explore the area. Being new, I wasn't familiar with the local restaurants and entertainment venues (movies, bowling, sports, and more), but with the Entertainment Book, I was able to flip through by neighborhood and find places that were near to where I lived or where I was. It gave me a chance to try new things and save.

Now that I am married and have kids, we still use the Entertainment Book. There are a number of offers for local movie theaters, local mini-golf and entertainment centers, local sports teams (minor league), and zoos and museums. Since these are things that we would do anyway, it is nice to be able to save while we have fun with the kids. We still, of course, use the restaurant and the dry cleaning coupons too.

The book has gone more high-tech in recent years. Now, when you register your book online, you gain access to additional coupons through their website and now, through your phone too!

We also like giving the Entertainment Book as a gift. They are a great option for those in your life that like to try new restaurants or like to golf or like to check out the arts and culture in their community.

If you haven't checked out the Entertainment book, I highly recommend that you do. Review the discounts and deals in the book for your area. If you can find two or three offers that you know you will use and cover the cost of the book, then any other offers you use will be a good return on your investment. As an example, if you do a lot of dry cleaning, there are coupons in my book for 50% off your dry cleaning order, up to $10, each month. If I used these every month, I could save up to $120. Those coupons alone will pay for my book. If you are a golfer, or someone in your family is, there are a number of local courses that offer a free green fee with green fee, the senior rate to everyone, a free bucket of balls at the driving range, and more. Again, the savings opportunity for the golf alone will cover the cost of the book.

Sound of Music - BluRay and Soundtrack

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Sound of Music. In fact, you may have heard me mention that more than a few times on this blog.

Last fall, shortly after the Sing Along tour, The Sound of Music soundtrack and movie were re-released. I was really happy to receive a copy of both the Soundtrack and the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack with 3 discs.

The Soundtrack, which is a 45th Anniversary Special Edition version, includes all the songs from the movie and includes a special recording of Lea Michele, from Glee, singing My Favorite Things. The combo pack, which is the 45th Anniversary Edition, comes packed full of extra features and footage. First, the movie is in high definition. Plus, you can watch it with on screen lyrics, just like at the Sing Along. There are audio commentaries with Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and Director Robert Wise. There is a featurette about the making of the movie and so much more!

I mentioned last fall that I thought my daughter was too young to take to see the Sing-a-Long in the theater, but I figured that in the comfort of our own home, we could sit down together and watch it. That way, if she couldn't sit still for the duration or needed a bathroom break, we could take advantage of pause.

I warmed her up to the show by starting to play the songs in the car, right after we received the CD. I started with some of the catchier songs, like Do-Re-Mi and My Favorite Things. Then, I added in I Have Confidence and Maria. I'm not sure how much attention she paid, but she didn't ask me to skip them, so she had a chance to become familiar with the music.

Then, one afternoon, when my husband and son were watching a boy movie in the media room, I suggested to her that we watch the Sound of Music. I was surprised, she sat still and watched the whole thing. That meant that I got to watch the whole movie straight through. She told me that she liked it. In fact, it has been a few months since we watched it the first time and she can't stop talking about it. I find her singing Do Re Mi from time to time and A Problem Like Maria. She calls it the mountain movie and asks regularly about watching it again.

She watched it again last weekend, mostly without me, as I was preparing dinner in the kitchen. When her brother came into the room, she was busy trying to tell him who everyone was (with lots of questions to mom - is that her big brother and which one is Maria?). She was rather concerned when the movie went to Intermission - in fact, I had to skip it. I tried to explain why it was included, but she didn't care. I guess that is one difference that will always exist, I grew up watching it on TV, complete with commercials. I think I was in high school the first time I watched it on VHS and was able to see the movie without interruptions, although I did have to change the tape at the intermission since it didn't all fit on one. I was an adult before I got my own copy on DVD and could watch it when I wanted. She will likely only ever know watching it on DVD, because really, why would we watch it on TV when we can watch it on DVD?

I love that she is growing up and I can start to share things that were my favorite things when I was a little girl (and many of which still are today). I have books and movies that I can't wait to share with her. Of course, part of me still wants her to slow down and stay a little girl longer - time goes too fast.

The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event

One of my all-time favorite shows is the Sound of Music. For years, I would look forward to the movie being shown on TV, as this was my only way to watch it. Then, when I was older, and we had a VCR, I found a copy of it at the library that I would check out from time to time so that I could watch it without waiting for the movie to be on TV. The first time I watched the movie on VHS, I was very surprised to learn how much had been edited out of the movie for television. It was a long movie, it was one of only a few titles that the library had that took up two tapes.

I have also been fortunate to enjoy seeing The Sound of Music performed on stage. When I was in high school, my parents took me to see The Sound of Music at a Dinner Theater for a Sunday Brunch. I also saw it performed in my hometown. I can't recall if it was a high school production or the local theater, but either way, I enjoyed seeing it live.

When I was in college, my family took a family vacation to Europe. One of our stops was Salzburg, Austria, where we took a self-guided Sound of Music tour. To me, it was a highlight of the vacation, I'm sure my brothers were less than excited, but they were good sports. I loved seeing the landmarks that had become so familiar after years of enjoying the movie.

I now own the DVD, but as a mom don't get many chances to watch it. I'm hoping soon that my daughter will be old enough to enjoy the movie and sit still for the almost three hours that it runs. The DVD came with many special features which have helped me learn more about the movie, the musical, the actors, the city of Salzburg and more.

The one place that I haven't seen the show is on the big screen at a movie theater. But, guess what! Now is my chance!

This year marks 45 years since the movie was released. In celebration, they are holding The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event: 45th Anniversary Celebration!. Tonight (October 19th) and next Tuesday (October 26th), at select theaters, you can enjoy the Sound of Music on the big screen and sing-a-long to all of your favorite songs. I can't get my husband excited about going to see this one, but will have to see about going with a friend. A few years ago, my husband was gracious enough to take me to a Grease Sing-Along event and I loved it (he tolerated it, because he knew that I loved it).

I am also pretty excited about the upcoming release on Blu-Ray and DVD Combo packs early next month.

Doesn't hearing about all of this event just make you want to break out in a Do-Re-Mi?

Secretariat - Advanced Screening

If you are one of the first 50 (fifty) by location to RSVP, you could get the opportunity to attend an advanced screening of the new Disney film Secretariat, which is scheduled to be released on October 8th.

It appears that there are advanced screenings at theaters across the country and appear to be showing the week of September 20th. Each RSVP is good for two tickets to the screening.

Toy Story Deals

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are being released today as Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. Each combo pack includes a coupon good for one admission (up to $8.50) to Toy Story 3 when it comes out this summer.

We have the DVDs for both movies, but since we also have a Blu-Ray player, we are planning to upgrade to these two new Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs. Earlier this week, we had printed out the two $5 coupons that are available:

I am considering calling ahead to find out, as I'd rather not drive to Toys 'R Us if I can get the deal locally at Target.

Monsters, Inc and Up DVD Deal

Yesterday, Monsters, Inc and Up were released on Blu-Ray. A while back, I saw the Target coupon as part of their toy coupons release for $10 off when you purchased both the Monster, Inc and the Up Blu-Ray. There also was a coupon for Monsters, Inc available through Disney Movie Rewards, that my husband had found.

In looking through my ads this weekend, it appeared that the best price for the Blu-Ray combo (includes DVD) was at Best Buy - $23.99 for Up and $18.99 for Monsters, Inc (when you purchase Up too). I sent my husband to Target to do the price match and pick up the Blu-Ray combos using the Target toy coupon.

I actually didn't learn about the $10 Up IP until after he made his purchase (thank you Deal Seeking Mom). So, I called Target and asked if I would need to repurchase to use the coupon and they told me they could scan my receipt and do it as a missed coupon. Super easy - my husband said it took about 2 minutes to get the $10 credit back.

I have always enjoyed going to the theater to see a movie. I have many memories as a child of going to the movies with my parents. My mom would frequently take us to Tuesday night matinees (they don't do that anymore, do they?). I can remember seeing movies like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and ET with my family. We almost always shared a stick of SweetTarts during the movie. I remember trips to the drive-in, with a brown grocery bag full of popcorn. I have so many memories of movies that seeing a movie at the theater (or drive-in) is an experience that I love to share with my children. My son's first movie at the theater was Curious George. For my daughter, it was Kung Fu Panda (she didn't choose this one and slept the last 1/2 hour, but it was her first movie at the theater). We watch a lot of movies at home, but a trip to the theater makes it all a little more magical.

What a great way to enjoy a family movie day out on the cheap. If you are like my family, we eat cereal almost every day for breakfast, so it is something that we are buying anyway. If you are fortunate to be able to buy the cereal on a sale with coupons, it only makes the deal that much better. Be sure to be on the lookout for specially marked passages next time you are at the grocery.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Diamond Edition Combo Pack

The Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition Combo Pack was released on October 6th. This new edition features both a BluRay and a DVD of the movie in one package. I was given the opportunity through One2One Network to preview and review the film.

As soon as the movie arrived earlier this week, I made a 'date' with my daughter to watch Snow White this weekend. She was excited. We have been reading Snow White in our big Princess book and this was the first Princess movie that we sat down to watch. What fun!

I really like that the BluRay disc also includes a standard DVD. We only have a BluRay player in our basement. The car and the family room both only play DVDs. Of course, we wanted to experience the full impact, so we headed down to the media room to watch the movie this morning, where we could enjoy the improved picture quality and 7.1 Surround sound featured on the BluRay.

When we put the BluRay in, the Magic Mirror on the Wall, that is part of the menu, addressed us with a 'Good Morning' greeting and commented on it being our first time there. I thought that was kind of cool. The movie looked great. We chose to watch the original 4:3 ratio, rather than a special feature they offer called Disney View, which features the art of Toby Bluth in place of the black sidebars.

My daughter asked a lot of questions during the movie, she is 2 after all. From the get go, she wanted to know where the dwarfs were and then when we got to the part of the movie they were in, she kept asking about those 'boys'. All-in-all, it was a great experience. We explored a few of the extra features, including BD Live. There are also many other features that we have yet to explore on both the DVD and the BluRay version as well as on the bonus material BluRay disc, including games and activities, commentary, 'Snow White Returns', Karaoke sing-along and more.

There also was a coupon available here to save $10 . This coupon, when I printed it last week expired on 10/10, so I'm not certain if it is still available or not - but you can give the link a try. Each show is $1. All of the movies selected are G or PG Movies. You can purchase a pass in advance for the whole season for $5 (50cents/movie).

Regal

Regal Free Family Film Festival will be held this summer on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10 am. The series runs for 9 weeks. You can find a list of participating locations and movies here.

AMC Summer Movie Camp will be held this summer on Wednesday mornings at 10 am. Cost for the shows are $1 each. You can find a list of participating locations here. National Amusements presents BookWorm Wednesdays this summer - Free Kid Movies and Great Prizes. Kids can get free admission to a children's movie with a book report. March Movie Madness

I recently learned that Red Box is offering Free Wednesday Movies in March.

All you have to do is visit their blog, redblog, every Wednesday in March. There will be a code for a free one night's rental. While there, check out their posts. They have posts in many categories including DVD Reviews, Behind the Scenes, In Theaters, Hollywood Chatter and Award Shows.

I know we have been using the free Monday code that you can choose receive by text, or check out any of a number of blogs (like Deal Seeking Mom) that post those codes every Monday. It's a great way to catch up on a lot of movies for cheap, well free. They are also bringing back some classics so that you have more to choose from.

New to Redbox. They offer kiosks with movie rentals for $1 / night. You can rent them for as few or as many nights as you would like. To use a promo code, select rent with promo code. Rental does require a credit card, but as long as you turn it by the next day at 9 pm, there is no charge.
