CVS Deals - 7/25 and 7/26

Well, the coupons keep generating and I keep getting free chocolate! Yesterday, I tried to stack a manufacturer's coupon with the $1/2 CRT (I had included a filler in my transaction). The cashier said that I could only use one because they didn't cost enough to take that much off. I said that is fine and took back the manufacturer's coupon. I was disappointed that I couldn't take advantage of overage, but the chocolate was still free.

Frozen Treats - Yummy!

Even when I am watching what I eat, I am like a child and I like to end my day with a sweet treat (or sometimes have it in the middle of the afternoon). Some days, I make s'mores in my microwave, but in the midst of summer, there is nothing that satisfies a sweet tooth like a frozen treat.

One thing that I have noticed, now that I am more calorie aware is how many options there are out there that are either better for you options or at least are portion controlled options - both of which help me stay in control. I recently had the opportunity to try a variety of ice cream and frozen treats.

As I was making my choice at the grocery store, the first thing that I noted was the variety of options. Take for example the Klondike Bars. There are the standard Bars that I associate with the commercials (hearing the "What would you do, for a Klondike Bar" tune in my head), there are Choco Tacos, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Sugar Free and 100 calorie options - amongst others. I selected the 100 calorie Ice Cream Sandwiches. There is just something about the flavor of an ice cream sandwich that I love. They were always a favorite treat of mine as a child and I still love them. The best part - even at 100 calories they are a satisfying portion. They meet my need for a sweet, cool and creamy treat and I even get to have more than a couple of bites!

Next I decided to try the new Magnum bars. As I perused the line, I noticed that they were made with Belgian Chocolate, how could I go wrong. The flavor selection had my mouth watering. There are several varieties available - they have everything from Double Caramel, to Dark Chocolate, to Mint, to Mochaccino - they all sounded amazing to me. Trying to maintain my calorie conscience approach to stocking my freezer, I decided to try the Mini Pleasures. Described as 'all the pleasure in a smaller serving', they are available in classic and almond. Not a big nut fan, I went with the classic.
Now, technically a serving is 2 bars and is 300 calories, but I know that I can allow myself to enjoy just one bar and enjoy the luxury feel of the silky, vanilla bean ice cream covered in Belgian Milk Chocolate for only 150 calories. That is a treat worth reserving calories for!

Lastly, I picked up a box of Rainbow Popsicles. Personally, I would have been easily swayed by the Jolly Rancher or the Sour Patch Kids varieties, but my assistant liked the idea of Rainbow. This is the perfect treat for the whole family. With a variety of flavors in one box and only 45 calories per serving - it is a great way to cool down on a warm afternoon.

Now, some may say, why aren't the other ones a good treat for the whole family - trust me, they would be, I'm really just being selfish and don't want to share if i can keep those indulgences all to myself!

What is your favorite frozen treat?

No compensation was received for this post. I received some coupons for free products from Unilever so that my family and I could experience the varieties of frozen treats. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

Hershey's Simple Pleasures

I've shared more than once that I am a big fan of chocolate. To me, it is one of life's little pleasures (I actually found myself wanting to say, simple pleasures, but more on that later). Be it true or not, I like to believe that having a little chocolate each day is a good thing. I think that a little indulgence daily, can keep me from wanting to sit down and eat lots and lots of chocolate. Plus, I know that I have read somewhere that chocolate is actually good for me (something technical about antioxidants and flavnoids) and I know that eating a good piece of chocolate is something that is soothing to me.

So, even when I am watching my calorie intake and trying to lose weight, it is not uncommon to see me reach for a piece of chocolate. When I allow myself to indulge, I want it to be worth my while - this is true for books, shows, wine, candy, food, clothes, because there is nothing more disappointing than spoiling yourself and not enjoying it. So, when I have a piece of chocolate, I want to know that it is a good, smooth, flavorful treat that I will enjoy.

If you are one that likes to indulge in chocolate like me, you will be glad to hear that there is a new chocolate product from Hershey that will be hitting the shelves at your local Giant Eagle today! It is called Hershey's Simple Pleasures.

"Hershey's Simple Pleasures combines quality ingredients, including dry roasted cocoa beans, brown sugar and pure milk to create a velvety smooth chocolate outside and a rich, creamy center."

There are three varieties of Hershey's Simple Pleasures available - Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Creme, Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Creme, and Milk Chocolate with Vanilla Creme.

When I got the box with the samples, I couldn't wait to give them a try. I, of course, had to try one of each. Fortunately for me, they are only about 30 calories each (a serving of 6 pieces is 180 calories - I did the math to get to 30 calories) and they have 30% less fat than the average of leading milk chocolate.

As I prepared to give them a try, I wasn't sure how to eat them. I know it sounds silly, but generally, when something is cream filled, I have a tendency to want to take a bite out of them so that I can get the flavor of the cream mixed with the chocolate, vs a solid chocolate that I tend to allow to simply melt in my mouth, but the bag calls them an "indulgent, melt-in-your-mount chocolate experience".

So despite this 'direction' on the bag, I decided that I would go with instinct and take a bite. The first one that I tried was the Vanilla Creme, of course, as I would come to learn, this one has the most 'liquidy' center and that first bite left me with this tasty vanilla cream dripping from the second half. So, I decided that I would allow the second one to melt in my mouth. I went with the milk chocolate variety next. Trouble was, for me, the chocolate didn't fit nicely on top of my tongue, nestled into the roof of my mouth, so allowing it to melt and not chew it was a challenge. Lastly, I tried the dark chocolate variety. I took a hybrid approach for this one, I took a bite and allowed this bite to melt in my mouth, rather than chewing it.

Despite all of my challenges around how to enjoy them, I can assure you that I enjoyed them! I think that the Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Creme was my favorite, which is a bit surprising to me, because normally I am a big dark chocolate fan. There was just something so creamy and satisfying about the milk chocolate variety.

I'm not sure that Hershey's is looking for more ideas - but I think I'd like to see a marshmallow creme and a caramel creme - or a marshmallow and caramel creme variety for their next offering.

No compensation was received for this post. A complimentary sample of each variety and information was provided through Giant Eagle. All opinions expressed are my own or that of my family.

Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3

Milk is an important part of my diet and my family's. I've always been very fortunate that my children enjoy milk, like I do, so getting them to drink it has never been an issue. Sometimes though, I still like to give them a treat in the form of chocolate milk. Sure, you can mix chocolate milk up at home, but have you ever noticed that it's never quite the same as a premade chocolate milk that you can buy at the store? Something about the chocolate milk you buy at the store makes it creamier and richer than what you can mix up at home.

When it comes to buying chocolate milk, a lowfat milk is important to me. My family doesn't need the added fat of a whole milk (we used to, but now the kids are older). With chocolate milk, we are still getting the Vitamin D and Calcium that you expect from milk but if I could get even more benefit from a chocolate milk treat, that would be great. So, when I was contacted by Horizon Milk about trying their new Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3, I was excited. We have had their white milk with DHA and enjoyed it, so as with most things in life, I figured chocolate could only improve it.

We picked up a half gallon this weekend. As expected, it was a great tasting chocolate milk. The organic milk always seems to me to have a thicker mouthfeel than the 1% regular milk that I also buy (I think it related to the ultra-pasteurization, but that is not something I have seen specifically). The chocolate, to me, was just right - not too rich. In the wintertime, I frequently enjoy having a warm beverage in the evening. So, one evening, instead of my usual tea, I decided to warm up a mug of the chocolate milk. It was delicious warm. It was so much better than regular hot chocolate (which I usually make with water), plus it had the added benefit of providing me with DHA Omega-3.

According to Horizon, Horizon Organic lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 provides a great tasting and easy way to add calcium and DHA to your family’s diet. DHA Omega-3 is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health, and it’s available in lowfat half gallons. DHA Omega-3 is a natural building block that supports brain development and function throughout life. It’s good for the whole family, but is especially valuable for young children to support their rapid growth.

You can learn more about DHA here.
The Ingredients and Nutritional Data for the chocolate milk can be found here.
You can become a fan of Horizon on Facebook.
You can find a store near you here.

Chocolate Cheerios

I love chocolate! I'm sure that I have made that clear many times. It is one of my struggles when I am watching what I eat - I think I crave it (and not just when I stress, although more so when I stress). I have gone out of my way to find chocolate treats that aren't as bad for me so that I can indulge but stay on track. Some of my favorite chocolate treats include a small piece of chocolate, a cup of low fat chocolate milk, a small hot chocolate (hold the whipped cream) and chocolate yogurts. Now, I have a new treat that allows me to get in my daily dose of chocolate without too much guilt: Chocolate Cheerios

I saw them on the front of my Giant Eagle ad a few weeks ago and knew I must try them. As luck would have it, about two days later I got an e-mail from MyBlogSpark inviting me to try Chocolate Cheerios - how could I say no?

Let me start by saying we are big Cheerios fans in my house. We enjoy the original yellow box, the Honey Nut Cheerios, the Frosted Cheerios, the Fruity Cheerios and the Banana Nut Cheerios. On a few occasions, we have had the Apple Cinnamon and the Multi-Grain, but not as often as the others. I like that Cheerios are a good breakfast and a good snack. My kids have been eating them dry since they could pick them up and with milk since they could manage a spoonful of cereal and milk. They are one of my favorite cereals (along with Cocoa Puffs).

When the box arrived, I made the kids wait until Saturday to try it. I don't eat cereal and milk at home during the week, because I don't usually have the time. I was worried that if I let them open it, it would be gone before I got to give it a few tries.

The cereal delivers on the chocolate flavor without being overly sweet. I like that. My kids saw them as a treat (much like they do Fruity Cheerios and Banana Nut Cheerios) because they taste a little sweeter than regular Cheerios, plus let's be honest - they are chocolate and that has to make them special. I like that the Chocolate Cheerios is low in fat and only has 100 calories per serving and that it is made with whole grains (it carries the Whole Grain Guarantee that there are 8g or more per serving).

One of the things that was included in my e-mail was a recipe for Chocolate Cheerios Marshmallow Hearts. Now, if there is one thing besides chocolate that I like it is marshmallows - how could this recipe not be great? I'm thinking that most of the time, I would go with squares, but for Valentine's Day the hearts would certainly be cute. I haven't made it yet, but you can find a copy here if you would like to try it.

Chocri Chocolates

I love chocolate (as I'm sure I've mentioned before). I recently had the opportunity to try out some chocolate from a company that currently is in business in Germany, but in January is coming to the US. Chocri Chocolates was started by childhood friends back in 2008. Franz, one of the founders, was trying to find the perfect gift for his girlfriend's birthday. He decided he would decorate a chocolate bar with her favorite toppings. This first bar was white chocolate with gummy bears, dried nuts and fruit. From there, the business grew by word of mouth and soon this idea was launched as a business at chocri.de.

At Chocri, you can build your own chocolate treat. You choose the base - dark, milk or white chocolate and up to 5 inclusions/toppings for it. The topping list is diverse and amazing, with over 80 different toppings to choose. After customizing your bar, you even get to name it.

We created 3 candy bars, one using each base.

My candy bar was of course dark chocolate and included caramel, marshmallows and sea salt. Being very clever, I called my bar: Caramel Marshmallow
My husband used milk chocolate and topped his with strawberries, coconut, banana chips and banana shaped sprinkles. He named his Cocoa Nana Berry Bar.

My children went with white chocolate topped with banana chips, cashews, candy coated chocolate, strawberry flakes and sprinkles. They called their bar, Banana Sprinkled Strawberry Cashew Nut.

The candy bars were very good. Of course, the fact that we each got to choose our favorite type of chocolate and our favorite toppings, made the bars a real treat. It's not something you would likely do every day, but for a special occasion or a unique gift, a Chocri bar would definitely be a great option.

Chocri will officially launch in the U.S. on January 11 (perfect timing for Valentine's Day gifts!), but you can check it out a little before that. They will have an invitation-only launch on January 5. To get the invitation code, you only have to give your email address at www.createmychocolate.com (there's a box on the left). They will only send the password - no spam - so people can enter the website before the general public.

The chocolate in these customized bars is organic and fair-trade chocolate from Belgium. And Chocri donates part of their revenues to DIV Kinder, a charity organization that cares for the needs of homeless and orphaned children on the Ivory Coast. You can find more info at the Chocri blog about their contributions and support of charity.

What would you top your Chocri bar with?

I received no compensation for this post. I did have the opportunity to create three custom candy bars for my family to sample and enjoy.

Twix Bars

I love chocolate. I love caramel. I love cookie crunch. Together, it only seems logical then that I should love Twix Bars.

I am a bad snacker. There are times where I am not even hungry but I need a snack, just because I need a particular taste or a texture. Sometimes I'm not sure exactly what taste or texture I am looking for and then I become a serial snacker, moving from one taste or texture to the next. I will have something crunchy, because I think I need crunchy, but then the salt makes me want to have something sweet. Other times, I think I want something sweet, but it makes me then feel the need to follow with something crunch or salty.

The Twix bar is a quick all in one snack - it gives me my crunch when I need crunch and my sweet when I need sweet, so I am less likely to become a serial snacker when I choose it. Plus, there is just something so satisfying about that sweet chocolate, buttery caramel and cookie crunch. It has been a favorite of mine for years.

For whatever reason, I have been craving them lately, but since I have received and used up all of my Real Chocolate free coupons and no one seems to be putting them on sale, I have been left just hungry for one. Really, 89 cents for a candy bar. I remember as a child, buying candy bars for 19 cents regular price. I'm not even that old, that's pretty rapid inflation. I used to wait for them to go on sale for 25 or 35 cents before buying, but lately when I see a 2/$1 sale I know that's about the best it is going to get. Last night, on the way home from a work dinner, I stopped by the store to pick up some medicine for the kids and I just couldn't resist the urge to get a Twix bar even though it wasn't on sale.

Their is one variety of Twix that I think I would like to see - Dark Chocolate with a pretzel stick in place of the cookie. Just think, the perfect union of bittersweet dark chocolate with the creamy, buttery caramel and the salty crunch of the pretzel - makes my mouth just water thinking about it.

What do you think? What is your favorite candy bar? Leave a comment letting everyone know.

Jet Puffed Mallow Bites

I love marshmallows and I love chocolate, so when I was roaming through the aisles at Walmart the other day and happened upon this:

I just knew I had to try them.

Yum! In some ways, they are very similar to miniature versions of the chocolate covered marshmallow eggs you find at Easter, although the marshmallow texture is a little bit more like a marshmallow than the marshmallow cream like filling in the larger treats. One thing I really liked is that with them being miniature, you get a higher chocolate to marshmallow ratio - a definite positive in my book. In addition, the bite size pieces allowed me, with a great deal of willpower, to have just a couple to satisfy my sweet tooth.

I can't find anything about this product on the Kraft Jet-Puffed page, so I'm not sure if these were a limited item or around to stay. Anyone know?

The package was priced at $1 for the bag at Walmart. It has about 2 servings of approximately 24 chocolate covered marshmallows, each with 130 calories and 5 g of fat. The best part is that if I can limit myself to a couple, I can have a quick sweet treat for only a few calories. Based on 24 pieces in a serving, each chocolate covered miniature marshmallow has just under 6 calories - so 4 is under 25 calories. Yum! A quick treat that won't ruin the diet (when I'm actually managing to stay on one) and with approximately 56 pieces in a bag - that makes for 14 snacks of 4 pieces!

Have you tried Mallow Bites? What did you think? Share a comment or post a link.

Tried It Tuesday - Sweet Muse S'mores Brownies

A month or two ago, I entered a contest on Sweet Muse to suggest flavors for a Special Edition Brownie.

For those of you that have read a few of my posts, you probably know that I enjoy marshmallows and S'mores, so naturally, when I was considering a suggestion, it was only natural that my suggestion of a S'mores Brownie - dark chocolate brownie with marshmallows and graham crackers was selected to be the first Special Edition Brownie and is being featured in the month of June.

The description on the Sweet Muse site of the S'mores brownie is as follows: "The first winning flavor to be featured from our brownie flavor contest. The S'mores brownie includes marshmallows, the crunch of graham cracker pieces, and a generous drizzle of milk chocolate to provide the delightful taste of that classic campfire favorite without the campfire."

As the suggester, I got a Brownie Buddy gift box of the Special Edition Brownie. I received the brownies late last week. They looked really good (much like the picture here on the lower right side of the page). Then, the other evening, I wanted a treat after dinner and decided the time was right to try the S'mores Brownie. All I can say is YUM! The brownie was amazing, moist and rich with the right balance of graham and marshmallow to accompany the chocolate.

This brownie was the first that I had ever had from Sweet Muse, but I can tell you that I would definitely buy from them again and wouldn't hesitate to send a gift box to a friend or family member.

Have you tried Sweet Muse? What did you think? Have you tried something new? Share your thoughts in the comments or link to your blog.

Free Chocolate!

If you know me, you know I am a huge chocoholic. I come by it naturally, my Father is a big fan of chocolate. I give him a tin full of chocolates every year at Christmas (this year was Bliss). So, needless to say, I was excited to learn that Mars is planning to give away free chocolate every Friday from now (May 8th) until September 25th. To get your coupon, you need to head over to Real Chocolate starting at 9 am ET on each Friday. Your coupon is good for one single serve chocolate (any M&M'S® Brand, MILKY WAY® Brand, SNICKERS® Brand, 3 MUSKETEERS® Brand, TWIX® Brand and DOVE® Brand product). The coupon will be mailed and take up to 6 weeks to arrive.

There is a limit of 250,000 coupons each Friday. You can only win one coupon each week, but each household is allowed to win up to 4 coupons over the course of the promotion. You can see the full terms and conditions here by clicking on Terms and Conditions.

Good luck!
