Garage Sales

I love garage sales. I remember helping my mom set them up and man them when I was a child. When my husband and I bought our first house, the very first summer, we had a garage sale. I think it was his first, but it was pretty fun.

We live in a neighborhood now that has an annual community garage sale. We participate every year - I take a day off of work to stay home and run the garage sale. Not only does it give us a chance to get rid of things that we don't need and are taking up space in our house, but it also allows us to make some extra cash.

In addition to having garage sales, I love to shop at garage sales. As a working mom, I don't get a chance to get to many of them that interest me, but I still get to many. If you find the right garages sales, you can get some great deals. I have bought a number of things over the years, especially for the kids.

Just a few weeks ago, I headed out to the sales and was fortunate to find a number of deals. For my son, I bought 2 pairs of uniform pants and for my daughter, 3 fancy dresses, 3 casual dresses, 2 sweaters, a swimsuit and sarong, a pair of jeans and matching shirt, a pair of white shorts, a cute little denim skirt and a princess umbrella for $15.

As my son gets older, I have found that it is harder to find clothes for him at the garage sales. Evidently, boys that are 5 and up are rough on clothes, or there just are no boys in that age group that live at the houses with garage sales I shop at. I'm guessing it likely is the first one. At our garage sale, we sold more of the boys 3T and 4T clothes than any of the others.

Having garage sales to make money from what I no longer need and shopping garage sales for what I need, works for me. For more tips and tricks, check out Works For Me Wednesday at We Are THAT Family.
